The NACC celebrates its 2016 Award winners

The National Association of Care Catering (NACC) crowned the winners of the NACC Awards 2016 at its annual gala dinner.

The prestigious awards spotlight the continued exceptional work undertaken by care providers and caterers, as well as the sector’s unsung heroes. Every winner exemplifies a true commitment to excellence, innovation and education, and to reaching the very highest standards of catering that meet individuals’ wellbeing needs, both nutritionally and emotionally.

This year’s inspirational winners were recognised and celebrated by their industry colleagues at the special event held at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham.

The 2016 NACC Awards winners are:

Care Establishment of the Year Award - sponsored by Hobart UK 

This award is presented to a Day Care Unit or Residential Care Establishment whose meals and beverages deliver choice, meet the dietary and nutritional needs of individuals and ensures that the dining environment and the standards provided improve the experience and outcomes for the service users throughout the day. The judges evaluate within the submission evidence of:

• Person centred planning

• Nutrition and hydration needs of individuals are being met

• Outstanding levels of service are consistently delivered

Winner: Lymewood Court, St Helen’s, Merseyside

This 40-bed nursing home, Lymewood Court is the first home in the North West to be awarded the coveted title of ‘Centre of Culinary Excellence’. The judges agreed that it has delivered above and beyond the prerequisites for care catering, with a commitment to high quality and resident engagement.

Meals on Wheels Award -sponsored by apetito 

The award is presented to anyone who provides a meals on wheels service. This may be related to any events or

initiatives whilst delivering the meals on wheels service during the past year. The judges will evaluate within the submission

evidence of;

• How do you meet nutritional and hydration needs? • What added benefits do you supply?

• How have you raised the profile of the service? • How have you interacted with current and new customers?

Winner:Hertfordshire Independent Living Service

The judges were impressed by the Hertfordshire Independent Living Service, which has successfully increased in size from seven staff serving 180 people in 2007, to providing half a million meals a year to a further 6000 people today.

Catering Team of the Year Award - sponsored by Nestle Health Science

The award is presented to the catering team who has shown outstanding achievement in their field. It is expected our

winning team will demonstrate a dedication and commitment to their customers that is founded on the understanding

of care and of individual needs, choice and wellbeing. The judges will evaluate within the submission evidence of:

• Good nutritional and hydration care • Customer satisfaction

• Creativity and effectiveness • Evidence of team work

Winner: Morden College Catering Team

The judges praised the team at Morden College for its talent and enthusiasm, and for representing the fundamental values of care catering and continually ensuring high standards.

Catering Manager of the Year Award -sponsored by Premier Foods

The award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities; they will have

positively empowered both colleagues and customers and will be able to demonstrate tangible improvements to the benefit

of the commercial operation and the customer. The judges will evaluate within the submission evidence of:

• Operational improvements and benefits • How you added value to the customer experience

• Originality and innovation • Leadership and empowerment

Winner: James Clear, Hotel Services Manager, Care UK

In a hotly contested category, the judges praised James’ leadership and described him as an invaluable source of inspiration, constantly ensuring that the vulnerable and elderly have an exceptional catering experience.

Our Care Catering Hero Award - sponsored by Hoshizaki Gram

This award nominates a frontline worker/volunteer which could be someone delivering a meals on wheels service; a catering service or care worker within a care environment. This person needs to demonstrate how they have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure and enrich the experience of the people or persons that they either work with or provide a service to in a person centred way.

The submission should include two or more independent testimonials that could come from a service user, relative, carer or manager.

Winner: Gareth O'Hara, Chef, Sunrise of Cardiff

This new award honours someone who goes above and beyond the call of duty to enrich the experience of those they either work with or provide a service to. Gareth’s dedication to this value is exemplary and the judges agreed with the nominating statement: "If a chef could be cloned, it would be him."

NACC Region of the Year Award - sponsored by Kerrymaid

Nominations for this award are submitted by the regional committee and are required to demonstrate the successful operation of the region throughout the year. The award will be presented to the region that has most effectively met the

judging criteria:

• Interesting and original events and meetings

• Recruitment and retention of members

• Raising the profile of the NACC within your region

• Evidence to demonstrate development and improvement within your region in the past year

Winner: South East

The South East region claimed the coveted title for continuing to make the very best of the opportunities that its location provides and consistently delivering for its members and the national association.

Pam Rhodes Outstanding Achievement Award - sponsored by Robot Coupe


This award is presented in recognition of Pam and her outstanding commitment and contribution to the NACC and Care Catering. The recipient will have demonstrated exceptional standards of care, compassion and professionalism and have gained the respect and admiration of their colleagues and the wider industry. The award is made at the discretion of the NACC National Executive Committee. The winner will receive a trophy and a framed certificate.

Winner: Roger Denton

Roger Denton exemplifies true commitment to the NACC. With a background in hospitality and local authority catering, Roger has been actively involved with the association at both regional and national level.

Roger is known for bringing innovative and progressive approaches to the challenges of the day, and many initiatives introduced under his national chairmanship (1995-2001) are still going strong. These include The Community Meals Standards Document, Meals on Wheels Week, NACC Care Cook of the Year competition, and making the forerunner of the NACC Training & Development Forum a national event.

National Chairman's Award - sponsored by the NACC


This award is presented without specific criteria or independent judging, the National Chairman's Award is the gift of the Chairman and is awarded to an organisation or individual who, in the opinion of the Chairman has displayed an exceptional commitment over a number of years, or made an outstanding individual contribution to the National Association of Care Catering. The winner will receive a trophy and a framed certificate.

Winner: Preston Walker, Oak House Care Home

The special gift of the NACC National Chair for exceptional commitment to the NACC was presented to Preston Walker, the director/chef at Oak House Care Home.

Preston was singled out and praised for his ongoing willingness to give his time, expertise and support, both regionally and nationally, to the NACC and its members, and often with the shortest of notice. His talent and knowledge about care catering, coupled with his passion to make a difference is inspiring and Preston has been invaluable to NACC working groups in areas such as the NVQ qualification, dysphagia and fortification.
