The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has been notified by the NHS and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) that a manufacturer has withdrawn frozen cooked chicken products after Listeria monocytogenes was detected. The level of Listeria is within the legal limit for commercial sale. However, the products are supplied onward to NHS food chains and other health and social care settings where low levels of Listeria pose a risk to vulnerable groups.
The supplier has contacted customer organisations, which are withdrawing the product from local supply chains. UKHSA is not currently aware of any clinical cases linked to this incident. This briefing aims to inform health and social care professionals and to raise awareness of the potential for listeriosis linked to these products in health and social care settings and recommends key actions for UKHSA, the NHS and Local Authorities.
