West Dunbartonshire Care Homes Achieve Food for Life Certification

Published: 4th August 2025

Two care homes in West Dunbartonshire have become the first in Scotland to receive the Food for Life Served Here (FFLSH) Bronze certification, recognising their efforts to provide freshly prepared, locally sourced, and sustainable meals.

Crosslet House in Dumbarton and Queen’s Quay House in Clydebank, which together serve over 50,000 meals annually, were awarded the certification as part of West Dunbartonshire Council’s ongoing commitment to improving food quality across its services. The council also holds the certification for its school meals service.

This development is part of the wider Food for Life Scotland public sector expansion programme, which supports caterers across care homes, schools, universities, government workplaces and other public institutions to serve healthier and more sustainable food.

“We’re pleased to see care home sites achieving the Food for Life Served Here certification,” said Sarah Duley, Co-Director and Head of Food at Soil Association Scotland. “This demonstrates that nutritious and environmentally conscious food can be part of daily life in care settings. We’re looking forward to supporting more care home teams across Scotland.”

Achieving the FFLSH Bronze certification involved menu adjustments and sourcing changes, enabling catering staff to align with the programme’s standards for sustainability and quality.

“The certification allowed our teams to further improve the quality of food on offer and to embed more ethical and sustainable sourcing,” said Fiona Taylor, Head of Health and Community Care at West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership. “It was a real team effort and supports our wider focus on person-centred care. We’re now working towards the Silver certification.”

Food for Life Scotland continues to work with a growing number of public sector organisations to help them use food as a tool to support health, sustainability and local economies.
