Nottinghamshire — Heavy snowfall on Friday 9 January caused disruption across parts of the county, but members of the NACC proved that even severe winter weather won’t stop vital support reaching those who need it most.
While only two districts in Nottinghamshire were badly affected, conditions were challenging enough to threaten deliveries to isolated and vulnerable residents. In response, one NACC member organisation, Vertas (County Enterprise Foods), put contingency plans into action to ensure continuity.
Three 4x4 vehicles were hired to navigate snow-covered roads, allowing teams to reach homes that would otherwise have been cut off. As a result, every vulnerable customer in the affected areas still received a hot, two-course meal despite the conditions.
With further snow warnings in place, staff took the 4x4 vehicles home overnight. The following morning, the vehicles were used to collect delivery drivers and administration staff from their homes, helping services start on time and maintaining coverage across the area.
Support also came from colleagues beyond catering teams. With assistance from VNL Landscape, the entrance and driveway to the distribution unit and road around the building were cleared and gritted, ensuring staff could work safely and vehicles could move in and out without delay.
The effort highlights the wider commitment of NACC members across the country, who routinely plan for adverse weather to protect essential services. From hot meals to welfare checks, care caterers play a crucial role in supporting vulnerable people—whatever the forecast.
As winter continues, the message from the sector is clear: snow, ice or disruption, NACC members will keep showing up to make sure no one is left without support.
